NJUG is recognised as the utility arm of the Highways Authorities Utilities Committee (HAUC UK). We work together with the street and roads authorities, providing the respective governments of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with professional technical advice and expertise in respect of primary and secondary legislation, together with the detailed associated codes of practice and guidelines related to Street Works.
I had the honour of becoming Chief Executive of NJUG on 1st April 2007 and I plan to continue the excellent work carried out by my predecessors Frank Stewart from Thus plc and more recently Les Guest from National Grid, who along with many various distinguished practitioners, have grown NJUG into a major organisation providing a proactive and cohesive approach to developing constructive dialogue with our many stakeholders - my sincere thanks to them both, and to the rest of the team who work so hard on NJUG and its members’ behalf. Of course, taking this exciting role on would not be possible without the support of my employer EDF Energy Networks, where I hold the senior position of Head of Street Works.
Prior to becoming Chief Executive, I have been working with members of the NJUG Board, undertaking a year-long strategic study looking at how NJUG can further encourage the adoption of good practice amongst its members. This has culminated in a new Vision for Street Works, which I am delighted to say was launched on 19th April 2007. I and my fellow Board members are committed to achieving our vision and we will be working with our members and their contractors to understand what further actions and initiatives are required to support it.
Of course, NJUG will also continue to assist each of the governments in the UK to introduce fair, workable regulations and codes of practice, that balance the need to reduce disruption with the wider benefits to society as a whole, of safe, secure, reliable and affordable electricity, gas, communications and water services.
Finally, we will continue to provide the reference point on utility street work issues, contributing towards the continual improvement, and consistency of standards, use of new technology, such as minimum-dig techniques, and sustainable methods of working.
